Sacred Heart High School

Year 10 pupils from Sacred Heart toured the whole of Show 2 and gathered information about the exhibits as they went. In the afternoon they recreated detailed versions of their sketches with cardboard cutouts.

Park View Academy

Graduating student Ella Robinson showed pupils from Park View Academy around the Textiles exhibition and presented her work. Afterwards they had a look at Architecture and Communication Art and Design and made a note of their favourite exhibits. In the afternoon the class created a giant skyline with the shapes and patterns that they had seen in the show.

Cumberland School - Printmaking

Year 9 students from Cumberland School created a city scape from cardboard which they then used to inspire a whole series of drawings using different meduims and techniques. The group worked with RCA Printmaking Alumni Bronwen Sleigh who also took them on a tour of the Fine Art MA exhibition.

Ernest Bevin College - Sculpture

Year 10 students from Ernest Bevin College worked with RCA Sculpture Alumni Philippa Hadley Choy exploring the physical properties of plaster and creating abstract works. These sculptures were then animated with the addition of figurative casts. The group worked at the RCA's Sculpture site at Howie Street where they also toured the work of graduating MA Sculpture students.

Stanley Park High School

Year 10 students from Stanley Park High School worked with RCA Design Products graduate and Helen Hamlyn Research Associate for a day exploring solutions to eating and aging. The group were given 'emphatic' tools to enable them to understand some of the issues facing older people with diseases such as Parkinsons, Macular Degeneration and Osteoarthritis. Once the problems had been identified the groups began thinking about how crockery and cutlery could be adapted and developed to make eating with the sysptoms of these diseases easier. From drawings the students developed prototypes that explored simple solutions to common problems, many of the students also addressed the desirability of the products to sophisticated consumers as well as issues of cost and production.

St Marylebone CofE School

Pupils from St Marylebone CofE School visited the Fashion Show and quizzed top menswear designer Carolyn Massey about her work and her time at the RCA. Afterwards they answered questions about their influences and what inspired them by drawing quick sketches.

Year nines from Ashcroft Technology College responded to the work in Show 1 by drawing quick sketches and noting their initial thoughts about the work. In the afternoon they redrew their sketches with scissors on coloured paper.

Pupils from Ernest Bevin College created their own catalogue for Show 1 by recording their personal responses to exhibition with different materials.

Emily Keegin, who was one of exhibitors in the show, recently spoke about how much she liked the pupil’s responses. She said: “These are amazing! They’ve made my whole year. Musa’s is especially great.”

The Royal College of Art

The Royal College of Art is the world’s only postgraduate college of art and design.

Many other colleges offer both BA and postgraduate courses, but the RCA is the only one to offer only postgraduate courses. This makes the creative atmosphere of the college unique. Most RCA students have already graduated from another college with a BA degree; they may also have worked in industry or practised as an artist or designer before coming to the RCA, but there is no fixed route. Students come from all over the world, from Japan to America, Iran, Denmark, Ghana, or even London born and bred, to spend two full-time years at the RCA.

Students join one of the following courses to develop their skills and ideas: Animation; Architecture; Ceramics & Glass; Communication Art & Design; Conservation; Curating Contemporary Art; Design Interactions; Design Products; Fashion; Goldsmithing, Silversmithing, Metalwork & Jewellery; History of Design; Industrial Design Engineering; Painting; Photography; Printmaking; Sculpture; Textiles; Vehicle Design.

At the RCA students make work, research and write about their interests, and take part in discussions and collaborations. They like to experiment, to surprise themselves and others, and can become obsessed by an idea. RCA students sometimes work in ways that cross traditional disciplines; sculptors make films, photographers draw, graphic designers make sculptures. They often test what it means to be a designer or artist, so you might be surprised by the work that you see in the Show RCA, or how the students you meet describe themselves and what they’re interested in.

Graduates from the RCA become part of an international network of creative people who shape the culture surrounding all of us. Some of the world’s most acclaimed artists and designers studied at the RCA including David Hockney, Barbara Hepworth, Tracey Emin, Peter Blake, Ross Lovegrove, Philip Treacy, James Dyson and Ridley Scott to name just a few.

ReachOutRCA

ReachOutRCA is the Royal College of Art’s schools' outreach programme where RCA students lead a varied and rewarding programme of workshops, projects and exhibitions with London secondary school students.

ReachOutRCA has offered a series of workshops for young people as part of ShowRCA for the last three years. This year, alongside those workshops, we have developed Showzine, a website where young people will share their responses to the ShowRCA.

ReachOutRCA workshops are led by students and alumni from all disciplines and are based around their practice, reflecting the varied nature of the student body and their experience at the RCA. A key part of ReachOutRCA’s work is to highlight the unique traits of a postgraduate environment and to give young people the opportunity to actively engage with a creative process. This contact with a practicing artist, designer or maker is invaluable for school students in contextualising art and design as a potential vocation or area of study.

SHOWZINE WORKSHOPS

Young people from eight schools across London have been invited to work with RCA students to create Showzine, an online response to the ShowRCA.

Each group will visit a section of the Show and record their experiences through drawing, writing, film and interviews. These will be posted on this site to form an alternative online catalogue to the Show. Through the Showzine we’ll discover what has caught young visitors’ attention, their hot tips for the RCA graduates to watch, and their critical, emotional and imaginative responses to the work on display.

We hope Showzine will be a resource for other schools, teachers and young people, introducing them to the Show, the RCA and possibilities in study and work in the creative industries.

SHOWZINE WORKSHOP LEADERS

Your Showzine workshop will be led by students from the RCA Communication Art & Design department. They will guide your visit to the Show and encourage you to respond to what you encounter in a variety of ways. They will be able to tell you how they became an artist or designer and about the choices they made to achieve their goals. They will want you to ask them questions and get involved in lots of activities.

Owain Thomas

I am an illustrator who works mainly with paint and my personal work deals with narratives involving very real subjects. I enjoy painting existing narratives as well as creating and illustrating my own stories and characters. My work tries to explore the relationship between fiction and reality and the confusion that occurs when they become fused together.

Dan Brackenbury

I am interested in exploring whether it is possible to be a filmmaker outside the medium of film. Most of my work attempts to create filmic atmospheres and compositions using still photography. Recently I have been applying this approach to illustration briefs and working with existing narratives. I am mainly influenced by auteur film directors like Alfred Hitchcock and theatrical photographers such as Gregory Crewdson.

SHOW RCA 2009

Every summer 400 graduating students display their work in the ShowRCA. The Show is free, open to the public and is visited by around 40,000 people. It is organised into four separate exhibitions; at each one you can see the art, craft and design stars of the future.

The Show gives RCA staff and students an opportunity to discuss and assess the work on display. For thousands of other visitors it is a unique opportunity to see some of the most interesting emerging art and design practice. Collectors, employers, and professionals from the art and design world visit so that they can be up to date with the newest ideas. The Show is also a chance for graduating students’ friends, families and colleagues to see what they have been working on.

The work on display is the culmination of two years of work. It is often valuable, irreplaceable or delicate. If you are visiting the Show please don’t touch anything unless you are told that you can and take care moving around the space. You are very welcome to ask questions, take notes and draw. Photography is not allowed unless you are visiting with a ReachOutRCA Workshop Leader.

28 May – 7 June: SHOW RCA SCULPTURE
Sculpture students will exhibit large and small-scale pieces and mixed media installations at the RCA’s Howie Street site in Battersea.

29 May – 7 June: SHOW RCA ONE
Students from the Fine Art courses Painting, Photography and Printmaking, and Applied Art courses Ceramics and Glass, Goldsmithing, Silversmithing, Metalwork and Jewellery will display their work at the main RCA site in Kensington. Most of the work on display will be for sale.

10 June: SHOW RCA FASHION
Fashion students will present their final collections of menswear, womenswear, knitwear, accessories, and footwear on the catwalk. Catwalk shows are open to the public and to the fashion industry.
